Scultura jainista raffigurante il ventitreesimo Tirthankara, riconoscibile per la presenza del parasole in forma di serpente multi-teste (naga) che si apre a ventaglio sopra il capo e le cui spire coprono tutto il retro corpo fino a fondersi con la base. La figura è ritratta in perfetta immobilità ascetica, in postura eretta (kayotsarga), con le braccia rigide e le mani distese lungo i fianchi in segno di totale distacco dal mondo fisico. Il corpo nudo, slanciato e simmetrico riflette i canoni dell’iconografia digambara, che esalta la rinuncia materiale come mezzo di liberazione spirituale (moksa).

Devotional Jain Bronze figure of Parshvanatha
Western India, probably Gujarat, early 19th century or earlier
Jain sculpture depicting the twenty-third Tirthankara, recognizable by the presence of his attribute, or a multi-headed serpent (naga) canopy, which fans out above his head and whose coils cover the entire back of the figure, merging with the base. The figure is portrayed in perfect ascetic stillness, standing in the kayotsarga posture, with rigid arms and hands extended down along the sides, signifying complete detachment from the physical world. The nude, slender, and symmetrical body reflects the canons of Digambara iconography, which exalts material renunciation as a means of spiritual liberation (moksa).
