Scultura raffigurante Shri Vardhamana Mahavira (lett. il venerabile, prosperante Grande Eroe), ventiquattresimo e ultimo Tirthankara del jainismo, qui rappresentato in posizione meditativa seduto nella posizione del loto (padmasana) con le mani raccolte in dhyanamudra. La figura dai tratti essenziali è priva di ornamenti in linea con l¿iconografia della corrente digambara che esalta il distacco radicale del Tirthankara dal mondo materiale.
L¿identificazione con Mahavira è confermata da un¿iscrizione incisa sul retro. ¿¿ sa?vat 1350 ¿ ?r? Vardham?na ¿ prati??h? ¿ Ratnakum?ra ¿ sa?gha ¿ jaina ¿¿
La traduzione epigrafica suggerisce: ¿Nell¿anno 1350 del Vikrama Sa?vat questa immagine (pratim?) del glorioso ?r? Vardham?na (Mah?v?ra) è stata consacrata (prati??h?) dal donatore Ratnakum?ra, membro della comunità giainista (jaina sa?gha).¿ La data corrisponde al 1293 d.C., fornendo una precisa collocazione cronologica dell¿opera.

Sculpture depicting Shri Vardhamana Mahavira (lit. ‘the venerable, prosperous Great Hero’), the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of Jainism, shown here in a meditative pose seated in the lotus position (padmasana) with both hands in dhyanamudra. The figure is rendered with essential features and devoiding ornaments, following the iconography of the Digambara tradition, which emphasizes the Tirthankara¿s radical renunciation of the material world.
The identification as Mahavira is confirmed by an inscription engraved on the reverse:
¿¿ sa?vat 1350 ¿ ?r? Vardham?na ¿ prati??h? ¿ Ratnakum?ra ¿ sa?gha ¿ jaina ¿¿
The epigraphic translation suggests:
¿In the year 1350 of the Vikrama Samvat, this image (pratim?) of the glorious ?r? Vardham?na (Mahavira) was consecrated (prati??h?) by the donor Ratnakum?ra, a member of the Jain community (jaina sa?gha).¿
The date corresponds to 1293 CE, providing a precise chronological context for the work.
