Altare votivo jainista con Tirthankara
India occidentale (Gujarat o Rajasthan), XII secolo
Fusione a cera persa raffigurante Parshvanatha, riconoscibile per il baldacchino formato da un naga (serpente) più teste. Egli è seduto in posizione padmasana su una base a fiore di loto lavorata a traforo ed entrambe le mani sono in dhyanamudra. Il tirthankara è affiancato da due divinità protettrici in accordo con la consueta iconografia. La superficie è arrotondata e consunta dal tempo e dall’uso devozionale.
Sul retro è presente una breve iscrizione in scrittura devanagari arcaica. Sebbene molto consunta, è possibile identificare il termine श्री पाश्वर् (śrī pārśva), confermando l’identificazione della figura con il Tīrthaṅkara Pārśvanātha. Le lettere िव… संवत् १२… lasciano ipotizzare una data in era Vikrama (िव[क्रम] संवत्). Le cifre frammentarie suggeriscono una datazione attorno al Vikrama Saṃvat 1200, corrispondente al 1143 d.C. circa.

Jain altar with Tirthankara
Western India (Gujarat or Rajasthan), 12th century
Lost-wax bronze casting depicting Parshvanatha, identifiable by the canopy formed by a multi-headed naga (serpent). He is seated in padmasana on a lotus openwork base and with both hands in dhyanamudra. The Tirthankara is flanked by two protective deities, in accordance with standard iconography. The surface is smothered, polished and worn from age and devotional use.
On the reverse is a brief inscription in archaic Devanagari script. Although quite worn, the term śrī pārśva (श्री पाश्वर्) is recognizable, confirming the identification of the figure as Tirthankara Parshvanatha. The fragmentary characters vi… saṃvat 12… suggest a date in the Vikrama era (vikrama saṃvat). The surviving numerals point to a likely dating around Vikrama Samvat 1200, corresponding approximately to 1143 CE. Provenance: Central Italy collection.
