Raro Nagthang (ནག་ཐང་།) su seta raffigurante Mahakala

Rara thangka a fondo nero dipinta su seta con la figura di Vajrapani, divinità irata caratterizzata dalla collana di teschi, dalla postura plastica e dalla pelle di tigre. Cornice superiore ed inferiore in broccato di seta decorata con i simboli del buon auspicio.
Le thangka sono dei dipinti devozionali buddisti generalmente molto colorate e su cotone. Le thangka a fondo nero, sebbene questo stile si sia sviluppato già nel XV secolo, sono rare e quelle su seta ancora meno frequenti. Il nero simboleggia la vacuità (śūnyatā) e il mistero dell’assoluto. È anche associato alla trasformazione spirituale e alla protezione.

Rare Nagthang (ནག་ཐང་།) on silk depicting Mahakala
Chinese-Tibet, 19th century
Rare black ground thangka painted on silk with the figure of Vajrapani, an irate deity characterized by his necklace of skulls, plastic posture and tiger skin. Upper and lower silk brocade frame decorated with auspicious symbols.
Thangkas are Buddhist devotional paintings generally very colourful and on cotton. Thangkas with a black background, although this style developed as early as the 15th century, are rare and those on silk even more scarse. Black symbolizes vacuity (śūnyatā) and the mystery of the absolute. It is also associated with spiritual transformation and protection.
